Whiz Kids II
This is a tutoring program that runs during the school year in conjunction with the Denver Public Schools. Students in middle school are identified by their teacher as being deficient in a particular area of study, and are offered a tutoring opportunity with Whiz Kids. If they say they are interested, then a tutor is found for the student and the student and parents sign a contract enabling the student to participate in Whiz Kids. A DPS teacher is selected by the DPS to serve as liaison to Crossroads, and on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:15pm Whiz Kids II meets. The first hour is dedicated to the work of assisting the students in their areas of deficiency and working to enable them to become proficient and achieve grade level in math, reading and other subjects. The DPS teacher is on site for any questions or concerns the tutor may have. The last half-hour or so is “Club Time” where the students have fun and learn life lessons and character qualities that will serve them well for life, shared from a Biblical perspective. Tutors are screened by Whiz Kids and recruited and trained before the sessions begin. Tutors stay with the same student, if possible, year after year, until they reach success.
